Longbows are tall and not recurved and relatively has narrow limbs which is D-shaped in cross section. It is generally widest at the handle.
Shortbows are the smaller version of the longbow. They are much lighter and more mobile. It cannot be drawn too far hence stores little energy and thus come with a shorter maximum range.
Recurve bow are the only bows that are used at the Olympic Games. The feature that defines it the best is that the end curve of the limbs forwards slightly. This increases the power of the bow and enables in smoothening the draw.
Compund bows use cams at the ends of the limbs. This reduces the effort of holding the bow at full draw. These can also be adjusted as per the needs of the archer.
An arrow is a pointed projectile which is shot with a bow. Just like the bows, the sizes of the arrows also vary from culture to culture. A person who makes an arrow is known as a fletcher.
An arrow consists of a shaft which have an arrowhead in the front. At the back, they have fletchings and a nock. Shafts can be made of solid wood, aluminum alloy, fiberglass, carbon/alloy composite or even carbon fiber. Nowadays, arrows made of carbonalloy are the most common type used for archery tournaments like the Olympic Games.
The arrowhead has the largest role in determining the purpose of the arrow. This is the most functional part of the arrow. The sharpened solid tip of the shaft is often used as arrowheads in some arrows. But the most common form of arrows tend to use separate arrowheads. These arrowheads are made of horns, metals or even other hard materials.
Fletchings were originally made of bird feathers. But now thin sheetlike spin vanes and solid plastic vanes are also used. They are attached at the nock end of the arrow. Using three fletches is the most common configuration though more can also be used. The bow and arrow apart from its ancient usage of hunting and fighting, is now also being used in sports.
